Stupid Chickens

My kids and I frequent  the Skilak Lake Loop Road.  It's a beautiful drive and allows for soaking up the warm fall sun on a crispy Sunday afternoon.  This particular day was especially busy with the infamous Spruce Grouse...or what we folks in Alaska like to refer to as the Stupid Chicken.  There wasn't a corner we turned that didn't have a stupid chicken standing on the side of the road seeking their much needed gizzard gravel.  Some of them smart enough to make a flying leap into the fall colored foliage, but still others living up to their name; freezing in their steps hoping to camoflouge themselves into the road and not be seen by a potential predators.   Even though we were not carrying the weapon of choice that day for Spruce Hen hunting,  it was still fun watching them strut their stuff.  The male spreading out his bounty of feathers while the female looking on uninterested for the moment, turning and trotting off in the other direction.   Is it mating season?  I'm pretty sure their mating season is in the spring, but I guess he was still feeling pretty handsome this time of year.   Enjoy.
